To Accentuate the Negative

and Eliminate the Positive

The tendency for the political party out of power to make a mountain out of a mole hill when slight imperfections surface in the party in power and be silent on issues that might cast a good light are so prominent in this day and age that one must gag at the sheer silliness of it all.

I recently received an e-mail from a conservative friend and former ship-mate that included the ship’s newsletter. In it was a letter from a retired Admiral in which he mentions “This is a `Heads Up’ on a battle we are facing now and down the road with the new Administration.” (The emphasis is mine).  Then he talks about the C B O (Congressional Budget Office) “has already drafted proposed legislation that would basically reduce our TRICARE for Life benefits to a system whereby we pay deductibles and co-pays up to $6,301 the first year for you and your spouse, with future years being indexed to increase with inflation. The retired admiral either is ignorant of government workings (the C B O is an independent entity that has nothing to do with the administration and, in this case is only making a proposal) or he is purposely trying to mislead his readers. In interviews since Obama has roundly rejected the possibility that TRICARE for Life benefits co-pays will be increased for those who can not afford it. In his column of August 5th, (Google Tom Philpott military update) Tom Philpott describes a meeting with President Obama in which the President “says his push to reform the nation’s health care system will not diminish health benefits for service families or retirees who use TRICARE, or for veterans who rely on VA hospitals and clinics.” This is yet another example of “yesterday’s news” being cited for what is supposed to be today’s situation.

The President mentioned how veterans’ health care is becoming a major draw on the defense budget; but “He stopped short, however, of supporting another push by Defense officials, as occurred annually under the Bush administration, to raise TRICARE fees on working age retirees…” So, an attempt to lay a black mark on this administration would backfire when comparing with the past administration who most military people adore.

I expect some of my friends from the other political perspective would paint Tom Philpott as a liberal and not worth reading when Tom delivers such news that might convince the objective observer that this administration isn’t populated by the bad guys after all.
